What is the name of the breathing technique in this class where Tracey breaths in thru the nose out thru the mouth, in thru the mouth and out thru the nose?

Hi, Tracey here. Thanks for your question and I wanted to let you know there is no name for the technique used in this class. Pranayama ~ breath work ~ is the practice breathing to direct the movement of our life force. The focus through asana, and most pranayama practices is through the nostrils to access both sides of the brain equally. The exhale I chose to work with in this sequence is used to release a greater volume of air, and essentially empty the body to bring balance. When the focus is on the exhale out through the mouth, the jaw releases more, giving the tongue space to settle which has a quieting effect on the mind. As the jaw releases there is also a softening of the shoulders and space for the cervical spine to settle. In turn the focus on the inhale through the nose aids in preparation for the bronchial tubes and lungs by moistening the air through moisture and mucous.
We are amazing machines, and the breathing practice sets the tone for the physical movement of asana to be rhythmic and fluid. Hope that helps.

As always, Tracy delivers an incredible practice. This one is especially renewing and special with its focus on balance. It is sooo much more than balancing on one foot!! I feel grounded, balanced, and fresh--like starting over again after a difficult week. Thank you!
