In this class, David shows you how to comfortably sit on the floor in two of yoga's more common seated positions, easy cross-legged (sukhasana) and staff pose (dandasana). He also helps you understand some of the basic yoga principles as you learn how to stretch your body effectively. This class is a part of a 'Yoga for Beginners' series. This is a great first video for someone new to yoga or someone who desires to learn the details correctly. I am so thankful to have found this website. Even though I've been an "avid exerciser" for many years, it's been mostly cardio work - to the now obvious neglect of my core strength and muscle tone. I expect that yoga will be an answer to help me regain the health and flexibility that recent injuries have brought to my personal priority. I jumped in to a yoga class at my gym, but from watching this video, I know now that I need the basics explained and this is the perfect way to help me catch up!

I loved it!
I don't know if I can sit on the floor right now, but I followed as well as I could, while sitting on a chair, and I dare say I feel better. Some of my pain is alleviated, and I feel relaxed! THANK YOU! Tomorrow I am going to find a mat and some blankets and see if I can manage to sit ion the floor. This was fantastic. I can't wait to continue practicing.

Hi David. Eventually, I want to be able to sit how you were in the beginning. You were cross-legged and your foot was in your other legs inner thigh (I think) lol. Right now I can't do that so how can I get there. For this session, I had to sit on three pillows to be comfortable.

You're doing great! The most important thing is to honor where you are at - add pillows if you need them and focus on the sensation and relaxing into it.

I was unable to sit as you showed with my knees at hip level so I sat on a chair. This was not as satisfactory as on the floor but I managed. Any suggestions for poses that would stretch those muscles and tendons?
There are 3 sessions in each series, how many times should each be repeated before moving on to the next series. I believe I will recognize when I am comfortable with the poses and may move on but I am not as flexible in the hips that seems to be necessary to sit cross legged with any comfort. Today was my first practice with you. My yoga for scoliosis class does not sit in that position very often.
I too had the audio and video go out of synch. half way through the first session.

Hi there. That's ok. If it doesn't work to sit up on a high support on the floor, then a chair is your best option. If you are looking for stretches similar to those, but in a chair, check out my classes called 'Chair Yoga for the Lower Body' and 'Chair Yoga for the Upper Body'.
You can repeat that as many times as you like, to make them feel comfortable in your body. That's the key. You want to be able to do them fairly effortlessly so when you move onto more challenging classes, you know how it should feel to be in these positions and how to adapt when needed.
