Plus Size Yoga: Shoulders, Arms and Wrists

Beginner II

In this class, Helen leads you through a series of seated postures focussing on stretching the neck, shoulders, arms and wrists. Helen recommends a bolster for this class, but if you don't have one you can check out this short tutorial on how to make your own!

Thank you, Helen! That class was just lovely, you hit on so many tight areas in such a short amount of time.

Lovely class! It's so refreshing to have a yoga instructor acknowledge and make suggestions for working with a bigger, rounder body. The pose sequence is great for working out the kinks caused by my bad posture.

Thanks for the lovely class with some sweet stretches- it was perfect for me today, as I'm trying to give a lower body injury some rest but I'm addicted to practising every day! P.S. I was mesmerised by your graceful arms the whole time.

Good for you for keeping up your practice and allowing yourself to modify for healing. This can be such a challenge for people, especially when they are used to a certain type of practice each day. My graceful arms and I appreciate the comment and wish you a speedy recovery! :)

I am so thankful for this class. Having a large chest is a (pardon the pun) huge problem that I've contended with for my many years of yoga practice. Until the recent acceptance of "bigger body" yogis, its been an issue that I've quietly found a way to work around for most poses. Its hard for people who are long and lean to understand the unique challenges those of us on shorter and wider side face during a twist or a forward bend. I'm looking forward to more from Helen!

Thank you for adding this class. It's perfect, and I'm hoping you will build on this series. It was comfortable and effective while it offered modifcations for plus size people. I so appreciate it!

I'm so excited to see this series coming out by Helen! As a physician I struggle to find resources to share with my patients that are actually reasonable for them. If they can't do so many of the poses because of their size, they get discouraged and quit, feeling inadequate instead of empowered! Keep it up!

Thank you for this! I am so glad that you are directing your patients towards something that meets them where they are. I have encountered more than one doctor who has offered nothing other than the suggestion I lose weight (it's frustrating to say the least!). We need more people like you who are moving people towards a space of empowerment. You keep it up too! :)

It's been too long since I made peace with my mat in the morning and was thrilled to find this video. The local terrain comforted me too as I'm a Kitsap, WA Resident. Please post for videos Helen. <3

Thank you for this! I totally understand the challenge of making peace with your mat. It is still a challenge for me, even though I love this practice so much. Sometimes the big win is simply landing on the mat, regardless of what happens afterwards. I'm so glad that you enjoyed this video and since you posted (pardon my slow response, btw!), there are more videos from me on the site. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this class! It was a nice stretch after a weekend of lots of walking hills on vacation. I am looking forward to more and maybe longer classes. It was nice to hear someone have some of the same issues with their body that I do.

I'm so glad that you enjoyed the class and could relate to the body issues. Whenever you take a class (mine or somebody else's), remember that the practice is there to meet you where you are, not the other way around. So you can always feel empowered to modify in any way that you need. Thank you for your comment and I hope you enjoy more of my classes on this site!

We need more yoginis and yogis of all body types teaching all levels of yoga so everyone can feel that this is an inclusive practice. This is a great start!

I was so excited to take Helen's class! I have practiced yoga for 20 years and am a Yoga teacher, and it is often hard to be a plus sized yogi because taking classes with other instructors who don't have the same body type as you may not understand why you can't fully get your arms into Eagle pose because of your busty chest, or to make adjustments to sit in a forward fold! THANK YOU HELEN for this simple, yet beautiful practice. I look forward to taking more of your classes! Namaste!

Thank you for this lovely comment and for being another yoga teacher working in and with bigger bodies! One of my fave modifications lately is to roll a blanket under the back of the neck when lying down. Helps to keep the chest out of the face, otherwise I need a snorkel! Please share your tips with me too, and I hope you are enjoying my other classes that are rolling out on the site!

Would recommend this as a relaxing practise for all body types to release the days tension; alternatively as a warming up practise for all body types, particularly if you're a touch on the stiff side and want to loosen up for your day. Looking forward to seeing more from Helen

This class was simple to follow, offered modifications, and offered a great break to the day. The sighs were a great touch, as well as the feet stretches. Looking forward to Helen's other videos!
