Julia, thank you for sharing your powerful personal experience and insights before coming to the mat. However, I feel very conflicted about this class, because the physical practice was absolutely fantastic. As a woman, I'm all about empowerment against patriarchal oppression. But as a social justice scholar and activist, I ask you (and DYWM, as this is not the only video just the most recent) to seriously consider that gendering energy is not inclusive and can harm the spiritual practice for so many. It also feels like wearing make-up while leading a class is sending a mixed message with respect to yoga philosophy. I mean no offense by these comments. Namaste.

Thank you for speaking up about your perspective. I, too, am a woman who seeks to dismantle patriarchal oppression for all. On my journey to examine how to make changes within myself (and therefore "the system"), I've encountered my own spiritual practice which draws heavily from yin / yang, shiva / shakti, sun / moon dualities, the energies that exist in all of us regardless of gender - another way to refer to the dual energies of masculine / feminine. In the spiritual sense, "masculine / feminine" energy is not gendered but simply refers to tendencies that we all have to varying individual degrees (for example, masculine energy is of action, pushing, organization, etc. while feminine energy is absorbing, pulling, creativity, etc.). I truly believe that once we understand the properties of these energies within ourselves (and others), is when we can truly balance them within us and have a more balanced world - one where we are free to simply be ourselves, outside of societal constructs - which is my personal goal with equality, the privilege of choice, to wear makeup or not, to represent oneself in the way they wish to based on their own wishes and what feels good. Just my perspective, and something to think about. Namaste 💜
