This is the most effective way to stretch your lower back (lumbar spine) in flexion. This lower back stretch moves the lumbar vertebrae posteriorly, and is particularly helpful for people with a deeper than normal lumbar curve (hyperlordosis). Avoid this stretch if you have lumbar hyperkyphosis

I have hyperlordosis and herniated lumbar discs. Each morning, I awake with a sore and stiff lower back. This stretch provides instant relief.

Though I've practiced yoga for years, I developed a belief that forward folds should only occur directly at the hip joint with the forehead moving towards the feet. Indeed, I had seen others admonished in stretches that allowed their lower backs to curve out. Hence, I was wary of trying this position before I realized I hold an extreme curve in my lower back. This stretch is exactly what I needed!
