In this class, David shows you how to comfortably sit on the floor in two of yoga's more common seated positions, easy cross-legged (sukhasana) and staff pose (dandasana). He also helps you understand some of the basic yoga principles as you learn how to stretch your body effectively. This class is a part of a 'Yoga for Beginners' series. If you're a beginner who would like to learn more about yoga, check out our Yoga for Beginners page.

I am a 74 yr old female who has had a left hip replacement several yrs ago due to a fall and then 2 revisions due to a faulty hip liner from the 1st operation. I have done some yoga classes but can’t sit comfortably cross-legged because my hip was set in a position to prevent dislocation (I had dislocated twice). My left knee sticks way up and doesn’t feel good even with blanket support. I want to do yoga and flexibility exercises. Any suggestions how I should sit to do yoga?

Hi there. Have you tried adding a lot of height under your bum, along with a folded blanket or pillow to support your legs?

I am grateful to be here...as I am getting older,I realize how much I need a constant practice to maintain flexibility and strength. I have been feeling really clunky, stiff, and heavy these last few years and I am hoping that by coming back to a yoga practice I can start to soften into a strong flow of vitality.
