I don't know why I have never done this practice until now, but WOW! This is a class I will likely come back to often. Thanks!

Literally almost passed out. I wish you'd warn us before we're about to hold breath for a full or half minute. How hard is it to say "take a big breath in and hold".... or give some kind of heads up that we won't be breathing for a while. Also, super important to be reassuring through these breaths to reassure or encourage when we should or should not be breathing. Many times felt that I should start breathing when in fact, I was still supposed to hold the breath.

You're always encouraged to breathe or rest if you feel you need to, especially if you're new to pranayama and it feels unsafe for you.

Hi there. Thanks for the feedback. In some classes the instructor leaves out any preparatory words or cautions in order to allow the class to flow well. This is one of those classes, so I apologize if you felt like it needed more of that. In general, chrismc90 is right, just take it slowly, take breaks when you need to and don't push yourself so hard that you feel pain or any intense discomfort. In terms of breathwork, if holding the breath or doing many repetitions of a certain technique doesn't feel right, stop when you need to for your own comfort. I hope that helps!

Thanks for your comment. After my frustrations and your feedback, I've read a bit more about pranayama and it's benefits. I've recently started your program, Yoga for Chronic Stress, Anxiety, and Depression. I've found that the intro videos to that program were very helpful, and by practicing different breathing exercises on a regular basis I am getting much better at this! I can hold my breath longer, and I better understand how to do it properly. I think after another week or two of beginner practice, I'll give this class another try and see if it's easier for me :) Thank you for opening my eyes to new techniques and lessons along my yoga journey.

I’d suggest a great book called Breathe as well. Really helps improve our breathing

This is the first time that I've ever practiced pranayama yoga and I think I'm hooked! This was a very welcome change of pace to my usual evening vinyasa/power classes, and I'm excited to delve deeper into this other (equally important) aspect of yoga. Thank you :)
