Yoga Straps

Yoga straps or belts are pretty much an essential item for all yoga studios and home practices. They are useful for all levels, for so many different purposes, are easy to store and are inexpensive to buy.

Do I Need a Yoga Strap?

Straps allow you a wider range of stretches for the shoulders, legs and hips while making it easier for beginners or inflexible folks to move into poses that require a significant amount of flexibility. They are particularly useful for binding poses and forward folds.

Which Ones Are the Best?

Yoga straps come in nylon or cotton, various lengths and widths, and with many different kinds of buckles. If you are looking for straps for yourself or your studio, we highly recommend purchasing cotton straps, since they are much softer and form to whatever they are wrapped around. The metal buckles are also much stronger and more reliable than the plastic.

What Can I Use Instead of a Strap

Superman tie used as yoga strapIf you don’t have a yoga strap, there are many items around the house that will serve the purpose quite well.

One is a tie, like the superman tie shown here. They are generally quite strong, soft and usually long enough. Just make sure you use one that can handle getting scrunched up a bit!

Rope used as yoga strapRope is also a great substitute, like the one shown here. Just make sure it isn’t too coarse, since the rubbing on the skin won’t feel especially good after a while.
