Yoga Bolsters

Many people associate yoga bolsters with the kind of class that lulls you to sleep - a gentle, deeply relaxing restorative class. Bolsters are like giant pillows, and lying on one immediately has a calming effect on the body and mind. They are more expensive than block and straps, so not every studio has them, but they are certainly nice to have at home!

Do I Need a Yoga Bolster?

If you are a beginner, or inflexible, or you simply enjoy gentle, relaxing classes, then you will find a bolster indispensible. Its length allows you to recline into backbends with added support, as well as move into countless restorative poses or deep stretches while lying on a soft pillow. What could be more blissful?!

Which Bolsters are the Best?

Yoga bolsters are made from a variety of materials, including cotton, foam and nylon. The ones with a cotton exterior and cotton batting filler are the nicest to lie on. There are also square ones and round ones. Many prefer the round bolsters because they open the chest more deeply when lying on your back. If you can, try each one out at a studio before you buy.

What Can I Use Instead of a Bolster?

You can quite easily replace a bolster if you have a soft, thick blanket that is easy to role up into a cigar shape. Use the straps to bind it tight so it doesn’t unravel and you have yourself a homemade bolster!
